Abstract

In recent decades one of the most used post-fire management is the extraction of the burned wood, this method is known as “Salvage logging”. This process and the method by which it is usually carried out, (dragging logs on the surface of the ground and use of heavy machinery) has been proven to affect the soil properties and the recovery of the vegetation. In this study we analyzed the hydrological response of the soil three years after the extraction of burned wood comparing it with a control area in which it was not extracted as well as to what extent an application of mulch can facilitate the reduction of runoff and soil erosion. The results showed significant differences and that the application of mulch would help to restrain the erosion and the degradation processes of the areas where the burned wood was extracted.
