Periodismo y literatura. El Nuevo Periodismo: desde Truman Capote hasta Vázquez Montalbán

Periodismo y literatura. El Nuevo Periodismo: desde Truman Capote hasta Vázquez Montalbán

Abstract

The present discourse approaches the innovations of new journalism and their impact in Spain. To do so, we depart from an analysis of those techniques which characterizes this new journalism, specifically, those present in Truman Capote‟s novel A sangre fría. It is necessary to isolate the characteristics present in the previously mentioned novel, study the characters, identify the relationship between the facts which actually occurred and the ones narrated in the novel, as they occasionally differ. On the other hand, we will discuss the novel‟s non-fictional terminology, coined by Capote himself as a way of alluding his own master piece, leading us to the disjunctive paradigm of literary and journalistic veracity. Up to what degree is there truth, authenticity or coherence in A sangre fría? In the second part of this essay and before examining the arrival of the techniques of new journalism into Spain, there is a need to clarify the historical context in which we situate ourselves, in order to comprehend the scenery in which these techniques were developed. Hence, we will engage Spanish journalist and writer Manuel Vázquez Montalbán‟s novel, which can be considered both as literary and journalistic. We consider that he was one of the predecessors of Spanish New Journalism, innovating in techniques and formulas which had already began to surface in North America. To do so, we will take as referent a compilation of articles from said author published in Triunfo and in Interviú.
