Cambios de usos del suelo en el entorno del Mar Menor (1973-2016)

Abstract

En los últimos años, el intenso crecimiento urbano, agrícola e industrial en el entorno del Mar Menor ha propiciado el deterioro de la calidad de sus aguas. La agricultura es una de las principales fuentes de contaminación de la zona. En el presente trabajo, se pretende demostrar que el empeoramiento de la calidad de las aguas del mar menor puede deberse principalmente a los cambios en el uso del suelo, cambios en el tipo de agricultura o el sellado del suelo por áreas urbanas e industriales. Para ello, se ha digitalizado con QGRIS las áreas cultivadas, urbanas y los embalses de riego utilizando de base ortofotografías del PNOA de 2016, y en la época de 1973-1986, con el vuelo interministerial. Se ha observado que la superficie agrícola ha disminuido ligeramente en la actualidad con respecto a la época de 1973-1986, en cambio, la superficie urbana ha aumentado considerablemente: de 2492 hectáreas a 8622 aproximadamente. Se han contabilizado 3685 embalses en las ortofotografías del PNOA, respecto a 935 de los fotogramas antiguos. Estos datos revelan que el modelo de cultivo ha cambiado a ser intensivo y mayoritariamente de regadío, lo que ha favorecido no solo problemas hídricos, sino también un aumento de la cantidad de aportes agrícolas que llegan al Mar Menor por escorrentía, incrementado por el sellado del suelo.
