Abstract

Wetlands conservation is of great importance to ensure the maintenance of their functions and ecosystem services. One of its most important wetlands function is the retention and/or processing of toxic substances and nutrients. The objective of this work was the design and construction of laboratory-scale constructed wetlands, to assess their capability for the treatment of organic pollutants and nutrients loads similar to the Vinalopó River. A surface and a subsurface wetland system were built in order to experience different pollutants removal mechanisms. After a period of establishment, water treatment capacity was evaluated. High percentages of chemical oxygen demand, ammonium, nitrates, phosphates and total suspended solids reduction were obtained. Our laboratory-scale constructed wetlands had a high capability for the removal or assimilation of nutrients causing water pollution.
