Abstract

Introduction: Knowing the need for support from a third person in users with pathologies related to mental health is important in evaluation of Occupational Therapy and in its intervention. Currently, there is only the SIS scale validated in the Spanish population with intellectual disabilities. Therefore, this study aims to describe, in a pilot phase, the need for third-party support in people with a diagnosis of mental illness who attend the CRIS Elda, ADIEM Foundation of Alicante and Proyecto Hombre resources. Methodology: Cross-sectional descriptive pilot study in which 27 people attended by the ADIEM Foundation, CRIS Elda and Proyecto Hombre resources participated. A descriptive analysis of the sociodemographic data and the score of the 16 items and total of the VAVDI scale has been carried out, determining differences between men and women. Results: For the total score and for each of the items of the VAVDI scale, separating the sample into men and women, the results indicate that the activity with the lowest percentage of need for support is functional mobility, while the activity with the highest need is the management of the home. Discussion and conclusions: The study carried out allows us to present preliminary normative data of the VAVDI scale in the Spanish population with pathologies related to mental health, and confirm that it is a complete evaluation instrument of the need for support in activities of daily living.
