Fagoterapia como alternativa a infecciones bacterianas resistentes a antibióticos

Abstract

Introduction: Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a significant global public health issue. Bacteriophages, viruses that specifically target bacteria, represent a potentially effective alternative to combat these resistant infections. Objective: To evaluate phage therapy as a complement to antibiotics, analyze its mechanisms of action, determine its efficacy and safety, and investigate combinations with antibiotics to overcome bacterial resistance. Methods: A narrative review of the literature was conducted using the scientific databases PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scielo.Additionally, general information about phage function was obtained from websites and book chapters. Results and Discussion: Phage therapy shows potential for treating infections caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens. Genetically modifiable bacteriophages can enhance their efficacy and spectrum of action. Combining phages with antibiotics increases efficacy and prevents resistance. Challenges include phage specificity, immune response, and the need for standardized protocols. Conclusions: Phage therapy emerges as a promising alternative to traditional antibiotics, especially in the context of bacterial resistance. Further research and clinical trials are necessary to validate its safety and efficacy and to optimize its use in medical practice.
