Abstract

Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the small intestine causing chronic inflammation, atrophy and malabsorption due to the ingestion of gluten proteins. In addition, it is a disease that affects genetically susceptible individuals. Currently, the only treatment available is a lifelong gluten-free diet. This diet is safe and effective as long as it is carried out properly. However, there are multiple drawbacks. Due to this problem, over the last few years we have tried to study different therapeutic strategies based on the pathological process of the disease. This systematic review aims to organize and summarize the different treatments that are currently being investigated in order to find out where these investigations stand today and what their future holds.
