Abstract

Con el objetivo de caracterizar los diferentes escenarios meteorológicos que propician entradas de aire sahariano en la Comunidad Valenciana, se ha realizado un análisis de todos estos eventos africanos registrados entre 2014-2017 en la estación de fondo regional localizada en Caudete de las Fuentes (Valencia). Un total de 362 días con influencia sahariana fueron determinados (95 días/año), presentando éstos una mayor frecuencia durante los meses estivales. El porcentaje que representa el aporte másico sahariano a los valores de PM10 se mantuvo bastante constante a lo largo del año. La contribución media de polvo sahariano durante el periodo de estudio fue de 3.3 g/m3, lo cual implica un aporte del 23.2% al valor medio global de PM10. Se identificaron, utilizando el análisis cluster, un total de 5 patrones meteorológicos bajo los cuales se produce la entrada de las masas de aire procedentes del desierto del Sahara a la Comunidad Valenciana. De ellos, fue el patrón caracterizado por una alta presión en el norte de Argelia en combinación con el anticiclón de las Azores el que mayor influencia presentó en la Comunidad Valenciana. Este escenario tuvo lugar fundamentalmente durante el verano.

African episodes that took place in a regional background station located in ‘Caudete de las Fuentes’ (Valencia) between 2014-2017 were analysed in order to characterize the different meteorological scenarios that bring about Saharan dust outbreaks in the Valencian Community. An overall of 362 days (95 days/year) under African influence were determined, depicting a higher frequency during summer months. A similar percentage of dust contribution to PM10 values was registered throughout the year. Saharan dust contribution during the study period was 3.3 g/m3 accounting for 23.2% to the global PM10 mean value. Five meteorological circulation types that cause the transport of African air masses to the Valencian Community were obtained by means of Cluster Analysis. Our findings point out that the higher impact, both in terms of intensity and frequency, was produced by a circulation pattern characterized by a high pressure in the north of Argelia along with other in the Azores islands. This meteorological pattern took place mainly during summertime.
