Abstract

The fecal occult blood test (FOBT) procedure for early detection of colorectal cancer, needs to be enhanced among the population. The aim of this study was identifying predictors that had an influence on taking the FOBT and to know if sex and professional category had an influence on the intention and behavior of taking the test. Hence, a questionnaire was given to 64 people betweeen 50 and 64 years old, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The regression analysis showed that attitude (β= .43) and social norm (β= .39) are predictors of intention (R2= .64), but not behavioural control. Furthermore, contrasts analyses show an effect of sex on intention (higher on women) and an effect of professional category on past behavior (higher on people with unqualified jobs). The present study points to the need of replicating this exploratory reseach with a bigger amount of people, due to the adequacy of TBP to predict the intention of taking the FOBT. Once prospective study results are confirmed, strategies to promote the behavior should be different according to sex and professional category.
