Este artículo revisa brevemente, el concepto de Teoría desde distintas disciplinas y se acerca a formular la idea de Teoría en la arquitectura. Expone que la teoría nace del proceso de reflexión que el ser humano realiza frente a la realidad; proceso que al desarrollarse y formar ideas de esta realidad, permite la construcción de juicios críticos, apoyados en razonamientos históricos. Revisa igualmente, desde la historia la intención de definir y vincular la teoría con la práctica arquitectónica. Considera como en la arquitectura, se ha convertido en constante la idea de colocar la teoría al servicio de las especificidades prácticas según las necesidades de "generaciones distantes en el tiempo y en el espacio". Observa sin embargo, como a pesar de que algunos ensayos sobre la historia de la teoría de la arquitectura, consideran la bipolaridad entre "la idea y la realidad", es decir, la teoría y la practica, se puede considerar como la teoría siempre ha estado presente en el acto de diseñar y construir, en la medida que la teoría explica y fundamenta el valor de la obra creada.

This state of the art reviews the concept of theory from various disciplines and focuses mainly on the concept of architectural theory. It explains how theory is born out of the thinking process humans develop in front of reality. This process envelops the building of critical judgement helped by historical reasoning. It also reviews theory related to architectural practice through history. Considers how in architecture the idea of putting theory at the service of practical specifities has become a constant according to the needs of "distant generations in time and space". Observes though, in spite of some essays on the history of architectural history consider the bipolarity between "idea and reality", saying theory and practice, it can be considered how theory has always been present in the act of design and building, in the sense that theory explains and gives foundation to design.
