Research about the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) has been focused on the role of the circulatory system on blood pressure control. However, recently it was demonstrated that the RAS components are not only in blood but also in other tissues such as brain where it has not only functions addressed to increase blood pressure but also participates in other brain functions including the cognitive ones. With a deep knowledge of brain RAS we will obtain suggestions about therapeutic possibilities not only for the treatment of hypertension but also for the treatment of brain disorders. In order to integrate the current knowledge of the brain RAS and to obtain suggestions on its physio-pathological role, a review of the most relevant references and an analysis of the major current knowledge of the subject has been performed.
