Abstract

In this undergraduate project, the production of alkali-activated cements from electric-arc furnace black slag activated with spent diatomaceous earth and sodium hydroxide was investigated. Three formulations with 10 %, 20 % and 30 % Na2O were cured for 7 and 28 days alongside a reference batch with commercial sodium metasilicate. Density, water-absorption and porosity tests showed that the 20 % mix yielded the most compact, least permeable matrix; the 10 % blend failed to fill voids, while 30 % introduced extra porosity. At 20 % dosage, compressive strengths reached 28 MPa and flexural strengths exceeded 18 MPa, yielding the most balanced result; the 30 % mix further enhanced compression but offered marginal flexural gain. FTIR and XRD analyses confirmed optimal aluminosilicate gel development at 20 % alkali, and thermal conductivity reflected a denser microstructure. These results demonstrate that the diatomaceous-earth/NaOH activator matches or surpasses commercial silicate, valorizing waste and reducing environmental impact.
