Challenges in musical translation: Musical translation of the musical Beetlejuice into Spanish

Abstract

Musical translation, although it is not considered one of the most predominant fields approached in the world of translation, has a series of very specific characteristics in terms of the translator's skills. These are necessary for successful adaptations to be musically, humorously and culturally correct, taking into account both the source and target languages. To demonstrate the challenges presented by this branch of translation, I have chosen a selection of songs from the Broadway musical Beetlejuice to produce a translation into Spanish and demonstrate the possibilities and methodology necessary for the adaptation of a live theatrical work.
