Abstract

This paper examines the role of conversational implicatures in the development of pragmatic competence in learners of Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE), focusing on their explicit instruction in the classroom. Based on a communicative approach, a didactic proposal was designed and implemented with intermediate-level, university students that belonged to the experimental group in our study. Its impact was evaluated through questionnaires administered before and after the intervention, examining not only the evolution of learners’ inferential skills, but also comparing it to that of a control group participants’ and another group of native speakers. The data suggest that focused instruction on conversational implicatures significantly enhances learners’ interpretative skills, therefore, improving their pragmatic competence, especially in complex communicative contexts. In essence, the integration of the pragmatic component in second language teaching is highlighted as a fundamental element for achieving a real and effective communicative competence, in which both the comprehension and production of conversational implicatures play a key role.
