Abstract

La microbiota oral está compuesta por una compleja comunidad de microorganismos que colonizan diversas superficies de la cavidad bucal. Esta microbiota desempeña un papel esencial en el mantenimiento del equilibrio ecológico y la prevención de enfermedades. Cuando se altera este equilibrio, pueden surgir patologías locales como la caries dental, la enfermedad periodontal y la halitosis. Además, se ha establecido una relación entre disbiosis oral y enfermedades sistémicas como la diabetes, enfermedades cardiovasculares, partos prematuros y ciertas afecciones neurodegenerativas. Comprender la microbiota oral y sus interacciones con el huésped es fundamental para el desarrollo de estrategias preventivas y terapéuticas innovadoras.

The oral microbiota is composed of a complex community of microorganisms that colonize various surfaces of the oral cavity. This microbiota plays an essential role in maintaining ecological balance and preventing disease. When this balance is disrupted, local pathologies such as dental caries, periodontal disease, and halitosis can arise. Furthermore, a relationship has been established between oral dysbiosis and systemic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, premature births, and certain neurodegenerative conditions. Understanding the oral microbiota and its interactions with the host is fundamental for the development of innovative preventive and therapeutic strategies.
