Abstract

Emerging pollutants are chemical substances or materials that have been recently detected in water and whose presence may pose a risk to the environment and human health. These compounds, despite being widely used in all types of applications, have not been able to be determined until now due to the lack of adequate analytical methods that detect such low concentrations. Although these compounds are not subject to any specific regulations limiting their presence in water, they may be regulated in the future if they are determined to pose a risk to the environment. For this reason, it is important to develop sensitive and selective analytical techniques for the detection and quantification of these pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. This Final Degree Project focuses on the study of one of these emerging pollutants, cocaine, as well as its main metabolite, benzoylecgonine. The different types of sampling, sample treatment, and analytical methods for the determination of these substances in surface waters worldwide are discussed.
