Abstract

In this bibliographic study, different forms of entry of environmental pollutants into the environment and the different types of pollutants including their classification according to their chemical nature have been collected. A brief bibliographic review has been carried out on the scarce regulations on this type of pollutants at European level and their transposition into Spanish legislation. On the other hand, the most commonly used sampling methods for polar organic pollutants in surface water and the most common treatment techniques for the chosen analyte, caffeine, have been shared, being the solid phase extraction (SPE) the most used together with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. Finally, numerous studies on caffeine contamination in different parts of the world have been shared and their treatment and analysis techniques and results have been discussed.
