Abstract

[EN] Nowadays, there are a large number of children that suffer from chronic diseases and that require medical attention during the school day, especially considering they spent most of their time at school. The role of the School Nurse remains unknown in Spain. However, School Nurses have existed for many years in other countries. Additionally, schools are the best place to teach children about health and how to pursue a healthy lifestyle. This is mainly due to the fact that children’s schooling coincides with the key ages to teach children the best practices for a healthy lifestyle. The main objective of this literature review is to determine the need and importance of introducing the role of the School Nurse in Spanish schools, as well as identifying their impact on the education and promotion of a healthy lifestyle amongst the students. The research method involved a literature review of articles from ten different databases. The search methods varied from one database to another. For some databases it was necessary to filter the results in order to limit the number of articles to be analyzed. This database search method resulted in a total of 519 articles, from which 18 articles were selected after applying a process of inclusion and elimination for duplicates. The results of this literature review support the view that the role of the School Nurse is needed in Spain. However, the existing literature remains limited and does not provide enough empirical evidence to support this argument. More research in this field is needed to contribute to this argument.
