El auge arquitectónico que vive Jaén en el siglo XVI favoreció la concurrencia de buenos profesionales y, sobre todo, un clima favorable a novedades en el lenguaje del Clasicismo renacentista, ya bien asentado hacia la mitad de la centuria. Si además tenemos en cuenta la personalidad de Andrés de Vandelvira y su control sobre la arquitectura civil y religiosa a partir de la década de 1550, es comprensible el efecto competitivo que se pudo suscitar. A esto responde la aparición en el escenario de la arquitectura jiennense de la figura de Francisco del Castillo "el Mozo".
