Abstract

En 1558, a resultas de un pleito sostenido entre el patrono de la Capilla Mayor de la iglesia conventual de San Francisco de Jaén, D. Diego de Córdoba Mendoza, y la comunidad religiosa franciscana, decidióse continuar la obra en mejor forma y sólida construcción para lo cual abogaron los frailes por que fuera Andrés de Vandelvira su maestro y tracista. Esta predilección bien podía ser la lógica consecuencia del prestigio alcanzado ya en esos momentos por el arquitecto de Alcaraz, si bien existían otros competidores en el escenario jiennense con sólida experiencia en obras de este tipo, pero también cabe pensar en una confianza en Andrés, que podía venir de más atrás, y no sólo por su trabajo en Jaén, sino en otros puntos de la geografía española siempre relacionada con la Orden. Al invitarme Aurelio Pretel a colaborar en este volumen especial dedicado al maestro de origen albaceteño, hablamos de esta circunstancia: la de una cierta vinculación entre los seguidores de la Orden seráfica y nuestro arquitecto, cuestión que a él le había llamado la atención desde una temprana, diríamos casi “debut” profesional, colaboración de Vandelvira en su Alcaraz con el convento allí existente, y a la que ahora pretendo contribuir con esta importante pieza, por desgracia no conservada.
