Cultura musical y Nuevas Poblaciones

Authors: Marín-López, Javier;

Cultura musical y Nuevas Poblaciones

Abstract

This paper offers an overview of the development of a musical culture (understood as a set of manifestations, practices and knowledge associated with music and sound) in the singular context of the Nuevas Poblaciones de Andalucía y Sierra Morena. On the basis of the information taken from bibliography and historical documents, this study examines the rich soundscape of the colonies in four areas: school, private sphere, religious institutions and public space. It concludes that music, or more generally sound, played an important role in the installation and consolidation of the colonial regime and in the daily life of the villages, favoring the integration of the settlers in the new model of society through sound, choral singing and public and private practices of music and dance.
