Low power wide area networks bundling

Authors: MATZ, ANDREAS PHILIPP;

Low power wide area networks bundling

Abstract

Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) provide an energy-efficient and long-range network service to Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The Quality of Service (QoS) varies significantly between LPWANs in the licensed and unlicensed frequency bands, requiring to choose between cost and performance. In this work, the mechanisms that influence the QoS are examined in systematic analyses of Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) and Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN). The results indicate that no single technology can cover all use cases. Therefore, the novel Narrowband Bundling Protocol (NBP) is proposed, which provides an efficient multipath transport service to IoT devices and works over a wide range of LPWAN links. First experiments with a real prototype demonstrate promising QoS improvements.
