Abstract

During the reign of Phillip II the chorography with the painting were at the service of the Crown, and its main objective was to devote itself to the demonstration of the Habsburg Monarchy´s grandeurs. In this framework it was situated the charge that the king made to the Flemish painter Anton van den Wyngaerde to realize a series of panoramic drawings of main Spanish towns, like Jaén. In this view the artist combine topographic, urban and landscape elements, and he try to show the aspect more human and quotidian of the city. The detailed analysis and the interpretation of this work allow us to recognize which are the components that represent the political and religious powers and the economic strengths of the town.
