The feasibility of a continuous -wave frequency-modulated radar with a CO- laser as a transmitting source was investigated. A developmental system was constructed and tested and the feasibility of an optical radar utilizing coherent detection at 10.6 microns was demonstrated. The radar had the capability of instantaneous range and velocity determination,
