El cianuro es un compuesto altamente tóxico que se puede encontrar en la naturaleza de forma orgánica e inorgánica. Muchas industrias como la textil, la papelera, y la minera, entre otras, usan cianuro para sus diferentes procesos. Debido a la alta toxicidad del compuesto todo residuo industrial debe ser sometido a algún tipo de tratamiento que permita degradar el cianuro a compuestos menos tóxicos antes de ser desechados. Los tratamientos más comunes son de origen químico como la clorinación alcalina, oxidación con peróxido de hidrogeno y precipitación con hierro férrico, los cuales generan altos costos y desechos igualmente tóxicos. Como una alternativa biológica de degradación se han propuesto microorganismos y enzimas. La degradación por microorganismos es un reto por las altas concentraciones de cianuro que se pueden encontrar en desechos industriales ( 5000 ppm) y el elevado pH que se usa para prevenir la formación de ácido cianhídrico. La enzima cianuro dihidratasa de Bacillus pumilus ha sido estudiada como una alternativa para degradar cianuro en aguas provenientes de la industria.
Cyanide is a highly toxic compound that can be found in nature in organic and inorganic form. Many industries such as textiles, paper, and mining, among others, use cyanide for their different processes. Due to the high toxicity of the compound, all industrial waste must be subjected to some type of treatment that allows degrading the cyanide to less toxic compounds before being discarded. The most common treatments are of chemical origin such as alkaline chlorination, oxidation with hydrogen peroxide, precipitation with ferric iron etc, which generate high costs and equally toxic waste. As a biological degradation alternative, microorganisms and enzymes have been proposed. The degradation by microorganisms is a challenge due to the high concentrations of cyanide that can be found in industrial waste ( 5000 ppm) and the high pH used to prevent the formation of hydrocyanic acid. The enzyme cyanide dihydratase from Bacillus pumilus has been studied as an alternative to degrade cyanide in industrial waters.
