Abstract

Cerebral ischemia is the second pathology that causes most deaths in the world. It is due to the obstruction of an artery responsible for irrigating an area of the brain. Without irrigation, neurons die due to stress of oxygen and glucose shortage. The brain is the organ with the greatest demand for energy, due to its important functions. The damages to this organ have dramatic repercussions because it eliminates the regulatory connections of many important physiological processes. Studies about the effects of ischemia are necessary for the designing an effective treatment that minimizes the damage caused. Studies are non-existent in terms of the effect of cerebral ischemia on the basal metabolism, the last one being a measure of the energy expenditure of the vital functions of an endotherm organism. There are also no data about the relationship between the variables, when they are used treatments to induce ischemic tolerance and therefore influence the volume of ischemia in the tissue.
