Abstract

La actividad empresarial social ha venido ocurriendo desde tiempos antiguos, pero como elemento académico, su estudio comenzó en el siglo XX y los principales hallazgos conceptuales se han venido dando en las últimas dos décadas. Es un campo en desarrollo, el cual aun existen muchas diferencias conceptuales y diversas formas de acercamientos al tema. En el 2009 el estudio Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) incluyó como tema especial la actividad empresarial social. El equipo GEM Caribe consideró apropiado realizar para el 2011 el mismo estudio, para entender mejor la actividad empresarial social en el Caribe con el propósito de poder caracterizarla y para entender e identificar correctamente el rol del empresario social en el desarrollo del tejido social y permitir a los desarrolladores de políticas públicas mejorar el impacto de programas sociales en temas ambientales, sociales, económicos, culturales, etc.
