Enfermedad respiratoria exacerbada por ácido acetilsalicílico

Abstract

En 1987, Felix Hoffmann, basado en el trabajo realizado por Gerhardt en 1853, descubrió una forma estable de ácido acetilsalicílico (ASA) al mezclar ácido salicílico y acético. Desde entonces, el ASA ha sido de los medicamentos más ampliamente utilizados. La aspirina fue introducida en la farmacoterapia medica en 1899, y en 1911 Gilbert describió un episodio agudo de broncoespasmo luego de su consumo. La asociación entre sensibilidad a ASA, asma y pólipos nasales fue descrita inicialmente por Widal y colaboradores, en 1922. En 1968, Samter y Beers otorgaron la designación de tríada de ASA o de Samter a este cuadro clínico. En la actualidad, la mayoría de los investigadores clínicos incluyen la sinusitis eosinofilica hiperplásica crónica como una cuarta característica de la enfermedad. Muchos términos se han empleado para describir dicha enfermedad respiratoria: asma inducida por ASA, asma sensible a ASA, hipersensibilidad a ASA, idiosincrasia a ASA, intolerancia a ASA y enfermedad resperatoria exacerbada por ASA (EREA)
