Abstract

Las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, FARC-ep, son una organización política en armas cuyos orígenes más remotos traspasan ya el medio siglo, con lo cual superan los análisis de coyuntura y de mediana duración para situarse, junto con la historia del proceso de modernización del Estado y de la sociedad colombiana en la larga duración, dado que las motivaciones históricas del accionar de algunos de sus actores y la memoria colectiva de las poblaciones afectadas o influenciadas por este grupo insurgente, rebasaron los 50 años. A partir de los años 80 esta organización presenta un ritmo fantástico de crecimiento. En 1986 contaba con 3.600 hombres organizados en 32 frentes. 10 años después duplica su tamaño; según Alfredo Rangel Suárez en 1995 las FARC contaban con 7.000 combatientes organizados en 60 frentes y para el año 2002, estuvo constituido por un grupo aproximado de 12.000 combatientes, distribuidos en 70 frentes los cuales contaban con el apoyo flotante de 7 grandes columnas, con presencia en la casi totalidad de los departamentos del país y participaban mayoritariamente junto con el ELN en el control absoluto del 10% de los municipios colombianos y del 95% de los corregimientos. 1 Este cubrimiento territorial significó también incremento de la capacidad para poner en jaque al Estado
