Resolviendo el enigma de la tasa de mortalidad infantil en Colombia

Abstract

La Tasa de Mortalidad Infantil (TMI) en Colombia ha estado sujeta a considerables inconsistencias en su reporte y estimación y ha sido por consiguiente, una materia de debate. La TMI registrada para 2009 es 13.69, mientras que la TMI estimada por el Departamento Nacional de Estadística (DANE) de Colombia es 20.13. Cuando se combinan estas tasas con diferentes estimaciones del descenso de largo plazo de la TMI, las cuales van desde 2.5 a 7.5 por ciento, los datos de 2009 albergan aún mayores divergencias de la TMI frente a los años anteriores. Tomando ventaja de todos los datos disponibles, que incluyen tanto 443,338 reportes de defunciones (1979-2009) como 8,636,510 de nacimientos (1998-2009), el presente estudio establece el rango más probable de la TMI en Colombia desde 1980, incluyendo el periodo 1988-1997, en el cual no se presentan registros de nacimiento.
