Mordeduras por serpientes venenosas en el Valle del Cauca

Abstract

En la carta de la salud de agosto de 2009 titulada "Ofidismo, un riesgo para ser conocido”, escrita en conjunto con el profesor Femando Castro Herrara, biólogo de la Universidad del Valle, se ilustró sobre la biología de la serpiente y su relación el hombre. Las serpientes son animales muy importantes que cumplen una función en el “equilibrio cambiante” de la naturaleza y debemos velar por su protección. Los seres humanos que en algún momento estaríamos en riesgo de una mordedura, deberíamos tener en cuenta diversos mecanismos preventivos. Es importante conocer la biología de estos animales en lo relacionado con su anatomía, hábitat y costumbres, para evitar un contacto peligroso, al igual que utilizar diversas formas de protección corporal y herramientas adecuadas. La capacitación de obreros y campesinos en zonas de riesgo es un objetivo de la medicina ocupacional. Una vez presentado el accidente se deben tener en cuenta unas reglas básicas para su manejo. En la presente Carta de la Salud se hace un breve recuerdo del estudio del ofidismo en Colombia y en el Valle del Cauca, se revisan las características de las serpientes más comunes, sus venenos y las características clínicas dada por su acción. Se hace un nuevo recuento de las medidas básicas de primeros auxilios y manejo hospitalario.
