Abstract

La infección nosocomial se define como aquella adquirida dentro del hospital. Con una prevalencia del 7%, supone un gran costo social y económico ya que, por media general, incrementa de 7,4 días de hospitalización. Las principales infecciones nosocomiales, citadas de mayor a menor proporción, son las siguientes: infección del tracto urinario, de la herida quirúrgica, la infección respiratoria y la bacteriemia relacionada con un cateterismo vascular. Esta última, a pesar de ser la cuarta en incidencia, es la más grave, con una mortalidad que oscila entre el 25 y el 60%. La bacteriemia se puede clasificar en función de su etiología, considerando la enfermedad de base, atendiendo a su origen y al lugar de adquisición. Puede estar provocada por distintas bacterias y hongos, siendo las representativas Staphylococcus aureus y Cándida albicans respectivamente. Está demostrado que el tratamiento adecuado y precoz disminuye la tasa de mortalidad. La bacteriemia relacionada con los catéteres venosos centrales y periféricos presenta unas generalidades, indicaciones y tratamientos específicos; sin embargo, comparten recomendaciones generales de cuidados de ambos tipos de catéteres para evitar su aparición, como veremos más adelante desarrollado. El personal de enfermería desempeña una actitud activa frente a la prevención y detección precoz de procesos infecciosos relacionados con catéteres.
