Apoyo social, depresión y cáncer

Abstract

Since the 70s, the term “social support” has been considered as essential in the area of health. Many authors have studied it and all of them have concluded that it is complex and it has to be individualized. Most investigations defend the important role that social support has in the cancer disease, producing different benefits. This disease, everyday more common, is a potentially traumatic event, which needs a good control of negative emotions, because if not, people can develop associated mental diseases. The social support is a fundamental pillar to get over all these emotions, especially to reduce depression symptoms that are side effects of cancer, which will result in an improvement of the quality of life and a correct adhesion to the disease and to the treatment.
