Abstract

A lo largo de la historia, la enfermedad mental ha tenido consideraciones diferentes. Las personas que las padecían han sido, desde adoradas, hasta perseguidas. Reseñar que a día de hoy, siglo XXI, sigue habiendo una discriminación negativa por parte de la sociedad. La enfermedad mental independientemente del trastorno que el enfermo sufra, (depresión, esquizofrenia, trastorno bipolar) conlleva gran sobrecarga para los familiares por lo que éstos necesitan tener un gran apoyo social y cuidados específicos, por parte de los profesionales, para poder afrontarla con el menor coste emocional posible. Aunque las cargas para la familia del enfermo mental suelen ser similares, dependiendo de la etapa de la vida en que se encuentre la persona afectada, unas tienen más importancia que otras. Por ejemplo, cuando la enfermedad mental comienza en la adolescencia generalmente adquiere mayor relevancia la carga emocional que la carga financiera. A través de la Educación para la Salud/Educación Sanitaria/ Psicoeducación se demuestra en los trabajos analizados una disminución en la carga familiar y mejor evolución en el curso del trastorno del paciente, de ahí la importancia de que los profesionales de enfermería se impliquen en el cuidado de ambos.
