Abstract

ABSTRACT: The simultaneous biological nutrient removal from wastewater with high ammonia content was investigated using a pilot scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) operated under variable cycle sequences. The objectives of this research were to: experimentally assess the feasibility of a SBR for nutrient removal in high strength ammonia-nitrogen wastewater; determine the effect of operational parameters on the effectiveness of the biological treatment; determine operational parameters for removal of nutrients; and compare the experimental data with those obtained from the model GPS-X® v.6.3.2. The process allowed to achieve efficiencies of 89%, 94% and 96% for COD, TN and TP respectively indicating the potential that a SBR has for effectively degrading nutrients simultaneously. Several control points associated with different reactions within SBR cycle were identified in the pH, ORP and DO profiles. And the results of the simulation demonstrated high reliabilibity regarding the plant performance making this alternative more suitable to full-scale applications.
