Abstract

ABSTRACT: Aim: To know the epidemiology, characteristics and prognostic factors of open globe injuries in Cantabria. Methods: Retrospective review of open globe injury cases treated in the emergency department from January 2007 to December 2014. Results: 156 eyes from 154 patients were included: 110 (71%) were men, and the mean age was 54.4 ± 23.8 years. The annual incidence was 3.3 per 100000 inhabitants. Lacerations, mostly caused by metallic and glass foreign bodies, were the most common injuries and they affected mostly men of working age. However, women, particularly old women, suffered more often domestic accidents related with falls. Multivariate analysis showed that initial VA and retinal detachment were the most important prognostic factors. Conclusion: Open globe injuries are an important socio-economical problem in Cantabria. Improvements in education and safety precautions are essential to prevent them.
