ABSTRACT: In this study, technical efficiency of 26 of the 28 Spanish ports authorities have been studied from 2000-2013. The paper starts out with the definition of technical efficiency of Farrel (1957), and using data of annual memories of port authorities, a frontier production function is estimated. It is used a Cobb-Douglas function and Greene’s model of 1980 is applied. The obtained results show that biggest ports authorities are not the most efficient ones. In addition, the average of the technical efficiency of the Spanish ports system indicates low efficiency rates along the whole studied period.
