Cobertura del riesgo de tipo de cambio

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The following paper offers a quite wide vision of a basic concept in economy, as it is the exchange rate. We are nowadays living in a fully globalized world, where distances and trade barriers are shrinking day by day, and where commercial operations are being carried out in any currency. The exchange rate is subjected to continual volatility in financial markets, in which big investors are able to affect its price. Every market operation that is done in a currency different from the one in our country, entails a plus of risk, stemming from the huge change of the exchange rate varying its price one month to the next. Thus, the market provides us with different instruments aiming to avoid that risk, the so-called hedging instruments. At the beginning of the paper, an introduction to the currency market, known as FOREX has been done, stressing on the main factors that may modify the exchange rate or the many exchange rate regimes that exist. Besides, a complete study of the euro/dollar rate during the last years has been done. Then, two of the main hedging instruments that can be chosen in the market have been explained, specifically the forward, and the options, and the different kinds of them that can be encountered, depending on the needs of the agent. In order to get a deep understanding of both concepts, a practical exercise has been carried out, using real data, explaining both instruments, reflecting the advantages and drawbacks of them, and trying to decide which might be a better way of avoiding the risk in a commercial operation.
