Sistemas urbanos de drenaje sostenible (SUDS)

Abstract

This paper deals with the Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) or Best Management Practices (BMPs). The concept of the sustainable development applied to the urban drainage supposes the application of these systems with the intention of avoiding problems like floods, diffuse contamination and loss of biodiversity. The main techniques are preventive measures, pervious surfaces, soakaways and infiltration trenches, infiltration basins, filter or French drains, swales, filter strips, detention basins, retention ponds and wetlands. By means of a multidisciplinary process several SUDS are selected to solve the urban drainage, these constitute a treatment train which results depend on, not only the parts, but also the link among them. Everything is done with the purpose of completing the conditions as for quantity, quality of water, and service imposed by the design criteria.
