Abstract The decolonization of Algeria was a process which finished with a long and bloody war between 1954 and 1962. However, the factors that conduced to decolonization appeared many years before. The economic and political inequalities that touched the Muslim population, together with the appearance at an international level of an increasing protest movement against colonialism, leaded to the breakdown of the colonial status quo. The strengthening of nationalism and the adoption of modern methods in the political battle were the Algerian keys to end with French subjugation and achieve independence.
