Abstract

El suicidio es un problema grave de salud pública a nivel mundial, que afecta tan-to a jóvenes como adultos. Cada año, en el mundo, se suicidan casi un millón de personas, lo que supone una muerte cada 40 segundos. En los últimos años, la cifra de suicidios ha aumen-tado considerablemente afectando a mayor número de individuos y mayores capas de pobla-ción, sin incluir las tentativas de suicidio y suicidios encubiertos que elevarían considerable-mente la cifra. Según el Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE), en 2012 en España, fueron de-claradas 3.539 defunciones por esta causa, incrementándose un 11.3% el número de fallecidos respecto al año anterior. Además, ocupa el primer lugar de muerte por causas externas tanto en España como en Eu-ropa, por delante de los accidentes de tráfico, afectando principalmente a la población com-prendida entre los 30 y 39 años de edad. Los factores que inducen al suicidio, son relativamente conocidos y pueden advertirse a partir de estrategias de prevención y detección precoz. Dado el auge de este problema, hace que su prevención sea fundamental, aunque no sea tarea fácil puesto que requiere un enfoque novedoso, multidisciplinar y libre de tabúes, con la participación tanto del sector de la salud como de otros no sanitarios, como por ejemplo, los medios de comunicación. El profesional de enfermería debe estar preparado para detectar cualquier atisbo de conducta suicida para disminuir su incidencia, así como su impacto psicosocial en la comunidad.
