Abstract

El dolor agudo postoperatorio (DAP) presenta un aparente contrasentido, por un lado, sus características clínicas lo convierten en óptimo para ser tratado adecuadamente y por otro lado, toda esta disposición en el tratamiento del dolor agudo se vuelve en su contra, ya que su limitada duración despreocupa a los profesionales sanitarios y resigna a los propios pacientes a asumirlo como algo que forma parte de la propia intervención. Es importante no olvidar que el derecho del paciente a no padecer dolor emerge de un derecho fundamental: el derecho a la salud. Debemos tener en cuenta que el dolor no tratado, lleva a un aumento de su percepción y a una disminución de la capacidad de controlarlo. En los últimos años hemos sido testigos de avances espectaculares en los mecanismos neurofisiológicos que regulan el dolor, se han sintetizado nuevas moléculas y se han desarrollado técnicas que permiten tratar el dolor postoperatorio con seguridad y eficacia en la mayoría de los pacientes. Cada vez se admite más que el problema del dolor agudo inadecuadamente tratado se produce por una ausencia de organización asistencial que impide la aplicación correcta de los recursos terapéuticos actualmente disponibles. Los objetivos principales de esta monografía son: en primer lugar, analizar las causas del DAP para conocer mejor su fisiopatología; en segundo lugar, dar a conocer el papel desarrollado por la enfermería en las Unidades de Dolor Agudo (UDA); y en tercer lugar, establecer unas pautas de actuación para realizar unos cuidados óptimos de enfermería en este campo.
