Abstract

La inundación costera generada por tormentas extremas es uno de los peligros naturales más extendidos a nivel mundial. El primer paso para analizar los riesgos de esos peligros es disponer de mapas de inundaciones fiables basados en los mejores datos y modelos disponibles, teniendo en cuenta al mismo tiempo la incertidumbre. En este contexto, el objetivo principal de esta tesis doctoral es mejorar la caracterización de los impactos de las inundaciones costeras a gran escala, centrándose en la generación de mapas de inundaciones. El estudio propone una metodología flexible que se puede aplicar simultáneamente en grandes áreas, teniendo en cuenta la variabilidad espacial de las características climáticas y topográficas locales. La tesis demuestra cómo los procesos físicos locales pueden integrarse con el análisis del peligro a escala continental mientras mejora la caracterización de la incertidumbre y apoya una evaluación más robusta del riesgo costero.

Coastal flooding generated by extreme storms is one of the most widespread natural hazards worldwide. The first step in evaluating risks from such hazard is to have reliable flood maps based on the best available data and models while also considering uncertainty. In this context, the main objective of this PhD thesis is to improve the characterization of large-scale coastal flood impacts, with a focus on the generation of flood maps. The study proposes a process-based methodology to be applied simultaneously across large areas while considering the spatial variability of local climatic and topographic characteristics. The thesis demonstrates how local physical processes can be integrated with continental-scale hazard analysis while improving uncertainty characterization and supporting more robust coastal risk evaluation.
