Abstract

The study of shellfish harvesting seasonality is a key tool for the interpretation of coastal archaeological sites, as it provides insights into past human patterns of occupation and resource exploitation. In this context, limpet shells of the genus Patella act as natural environmental archives, preserving in their chemical composition valuable information about the environmental conditions experienced during their growth. In recent years, the analysis of Mg/Ca ratios obtained through Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has emerged as a rapid alternative to traditional methods based on oxygen isotope measurements. This approach enables the generation of two-dimensional elemental distribution maps of the shell, providing a substantially larger amount of information for interpretation. However, current analytical methodologies still rely on the extraction of one-dimensional profiles along predefined trajectories, resulting in a significant reduction of the available information and a strong dependence on the selected sampling path. This limitation hinders the achievement of robust and consistent results across different analyses. This Master's Thesis addresses this challenge from a data-processing perspective by proposing the direct use of the available two-dimensional information. The main objective is to develop an approach capable of transforming 2D LIBS Mg/Ca maps into a temporal representation without relying on linear trajectories, thereby making more complete use of the information contained within the shell. To this end, a methodological framework was applied to both modern and archaeological specimens in order to evaluate its potential for improving harvesting seasonality estimations. Through this approach, the study aims to advance towards a more robust analytical model that better reflects the nature of the available data.
