Abstract

A trial excavation made in 2006 has reveled two terminal Solutrean levels (II and II) in Arlanpe Cave (Lemoa, Biscay). The general information on the site, the stratigraphy and a detailed analysis of the lithic and faunal assemblages are presented. An AMS date of 17060±80 BP for level III is discussed. Finally the available data for the Upper Solutrean-Lower Magdalenian transition in the Cantabrian region, the nature of “transitional” industries and its chronological range and the significance of Arlanpe site in this transition are discussed.
