Abstract

The rock shelter of La Viña (La Manzaneda, Asturias) contains evidence of human occupation that places it among the most important archaeological sites for understanding the chrono-cultural phase of the Upper Palaeolithic in the Cantabrian Coast. The following Master’s thesis focuses on the Gravettian, specifically the archaeofaunal assemblage from levels VII and VIII of the Western Sector. It presents the results of the archaeozoological study of the macromammal faunal remains recovered from these levels. Through taxonomic and anatomical identification, combined with taphonomic and proteomic analysis, new data have been reconstructed about the subsistence strategies and environmental exploitation carried out by the human groups that occupied this shelter prior to the Last Glacial Maximum. Alongside previously analysed archaeozoological data from levels IX and X, this study provides an overview of subsistence strategies during the Gravettian at this site, contributing to the knowledge of this cultural phase at both local and regional scales.
