Abstract

This Final Degree Project investigates the propagation of ultrasonic waves in glued laminated timber, with the aim of assessing the validity of the non-destructive ultrasonic testing method (indirect technique) for defect detection. Experimental tests were carried out on Scots pine and spruce specimens, with and without preservative treatment, and belonging to three strength classes (GL18, GL24 y GL28). The study analyses the influence of transducer spacing, the presence of defects, preservative treatment, and prolonged water immersion. These tests were complemented with numerical simulations. Subsequently the specimens were subjected to hygrothermal conditioning to evaluate the effect of moisture. The results confirmed the feasibility of increasing the transducer spacing of the equipment used and highlighted the strong influence of moisture on wave transmission. It was also observed that preservative treatment increased propagation velocity, whereas prolonged immersion produced the opposite effect. Overall, the findings demonstrate that the indirect ultrasonic method is sensitive to the presence of defects, enabling their detection and localization in the studied structural elements. Therefore, its suitability as a non-destructive diagnostic technique for glued laminated timber structures is confirmed.
