Disability has always been present throughout human history and the way disabled people have been treated varies depending on the specific factors of each society in terms of political, cultural, economic and geographical context. Although, over time, regulatory framework has gradually been established to protect and promote their rights and to ensure quality in healthcare services, there are still many deficiencies in the care they receive. This is the why we can say that the due to shortcomings during the academic training in the health area and, more specifically, in nursing, generates inadequate care for this group. Therefore, it is both important and necessary to implement academic programs that ensure academic and practical training with a deep knowledge in this field based on the exponential increase in the number of newly diagnosed people with intellectual disabilities and neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This situation emphasizes the need to continue improving professional academic and practice training to achieve the required standards of care.
