Celiac disease is an enteropathy caused by a systemic autoimmune process resulting from a genetic predisposition to the ingestion of gluten and related prolamines found in cereals such as wheat, barley, rye, oats, and hybrids like triticale. It is a global public health problem due to the frequent long delays between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis, owing to the different clinical presentations. Understanding the prevalence in our community, gender differences, and associated comorbidities, among others, are important factors to consider when evaluating patients with symptoms that could be related to this disease. This is done in order to avoid an increased need for medical consultations until diagnosis is reached, as well as to prevent long-term complications of this disease.
