In this paper, we study the homotopy analysis method (HAM) proposed by Shijun Liao in 1992. We mainly focus on the version called Normal HAM, in which an auxiliary convergence control parameter is introduced. In the following pages we will see the relevance of the auxiliary parameter, as well as introduce the generalized Taylor series. Subsequently, we relate the HAM to Newton’s method and Olver’s method for the approximation of roots of algebraic equations. This method is also applied to nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODE) and we go deeper into the elements that form the HAM. Finally, a convergence theorem of the method is given and it is applied to a simple partial differential equation (PDE).
